Universal Cruise - Yamaha Road Star Midnight Silverado

These photos and guidance (shown below) on how to install an MCS MotorCycle Cruise Control on the Road Star Silverado were provided courtesy of Gene Painter, Oklahoma. Gene has used his ingenuity to install an older MCS kit previously designed for his Blackbird. MCS' new universal kit will be supplied to any person wishing to fit our cruise to their Road Star. It includes all major components and, thanks to Gene, details on how best to adapt the kit to that bike.

Gene's comments:

The CIU fits extremely well under the tank with plenty of space between the CIU and the tank. During the installation of the CIU, I wanted to be sure that the bolt in the center of the CIU was not coming in contact with the tank. So I put a pea sized dab of silicone on the bolt, and while it was wet I put the tank on and then took it off to see if there was any transfer of the silicone to the tank and there was not. Also, I looked under the tank with a scope to check things out and the CIU was not in contact with the tank. I placed the ball nipple in the same marked holes in the CIU as required for the Blackbird. I did have to modify the speed sensor bracket slightly by straightening it out and then bending it so that the angles were less severe. In order to mount the actuator where I wanted it, I had to reposition the flasher and starter relays forward slightly. I had to make a new bracket to mount the relays which I duplicated from the original, except I made straight instead of u-shaped.

The universal electrical loom is supplied terminated at both ends with appropriate connectors. Our new waterproof computer connector allows the installer to readily shorten wires and crimp or solder on new terminals supplied in the kit to produce a robust, professional installation with a minimum of difficulty.

Our new computer provides:

1. full diagnostic testing features;

2. error codes which tell you what is stopping the cruise working or what caused it to turn off last;

3. a mode which reads the speed pulse frequency allowing you to recalibrate the kit and take it from bike to bike;

4. another mode which provides gain change features allowing the cruise to work well on any bike from a 250cc to a 2.3 litre Rocket III !
